Step back in time to meet the characters who made John O’Groats
For some time we have wanted to create a tour to showcase not just our brewery, but also the history of John O’Groats and, in particular, the characters who have lived in and around the “Last House”. Its taken a good bit of time to pull together. There is a lot of literature out there. Some of the history books conflicted with each other so its been important to make sure what is presented is as accurate as possible. Chatting to the relatives of folk who lived in John O’Groats has been very helpful. Nothing beats that kind of local information and often adds a much needed personal view.
We are pleased to announce the opening of the audio-visual tour of the Last House. When you visit us you can grab an audio headset and be guided around the Last House by an array of characters past and present to the local area. Its the perfect way to get an idea of life in this small community over the past 400 years; starting with the man who the village is named after.
Witches, Brewers and an Entrepreneur
There are tales of supposed witchcraft, and trials of people accused of sorcery. The historical rise of the role of women in brewing; bringing trouble to the ruling male elite centuries ago. An entrepreneurial young man creating a ferry service to service the Scottish mainland with the Orkneys; and an insight to some of the legends that abound in this unique part of the country. Do you know why an old mill stone makes the sea is salty?
Come along to the Last House, and pay us a visit. The tour lasts around 35 minutes and is a great way to get a feel for the place. Then relax in our ancient bar. It is located in the oldest part of the Last House so you will surely soak up the atmosphere. Some say they have sensed the characters of the past speaking to them from the ancient stone walls. Perhaps you will too after a couple of drinks.
